Low Carbon extension
Southwark, London
Planning approval granted, 2021
The smaller a project and budget, the more difficult it often is to include climate friendly ideas in the design. A committed client and design team can however find a balanced approach to reduce environmental impact whilst being economically viable.
Our approach prioritised the reduction of embodied carbon of the new ground floor rear extension. An optimzed timber structure reduces the need for steel to an absolute minimum.
The cladding consists of upcycled PVC cladding tiles, which also helps tackling the global problem of single-use plastic.
The extension replaces an old and uninsulated lean-to and as such greatly reduces operational carbon (heating) through super-insulated wood-fibre panels.
